Terra Homesteading is a blog about how to live a healthy and natural life. I am going to be sharing with you how we start our gardening season, how we harvest and preserve our fruits and vegetables as well as keeping you up to date with new tips and tricks we learn along the way! I would love for you to come along for the journey and hopefully learn with us.
About Me and My Family
My parents, brother and I moved here from England back in 2005. Gardening was life there! We had a beautiful garden at our house filled with flowers and trees and an allotment bursting with fruits and vegetables. We spent our weekends at the allotment, sowing, weeding, watering and harvesting. The growing season was amazing and we could be outside for most of the year, which is something I miss. It is therefore no surprise that I have the gardening bug and just love to be outside, it is definitely my happy place. My parents still enjoy being outside in their garden and always have a beautiful space to grow and relax.
I now live with my husband, son, two border collies and three moussing cats in a small town just outside Edmonton, Alberta. We moved to our acreage in the summer of 2018, it is a 2 acre lot with a wonderful view!
We are working towards making our acreage into a full homestead, but we realize that takes time and there is lots to learn! We currently have eight 5ft by 16ft vegetable beds, three beds with 5 grape vines in each and two huge flower beds. Our dream is to have chickens, goats, and a big enough storage room for our harvest! I want us to be as self sufficient as possible.
We are considered zone 3a and have to contend with about 5 to 6 months of winter. It can get very cold here, having to suffer through weeks of -50! My family love to call it Narnia! We long for the growing season with the start of every winter.
A Tour Around Terra Homesteading
Under the Growing heading you will find the subheadings flowers, fruits, vegetables and wildlife. Here you will find all things growing in a cold climate, all our tips and tricks.
Under Preserving, you will find posts related to how we harvest and store our food. There is also a tab for recipes, which is where I will share some of the amazing recipes I’ve found or created myself.
Under Homesteading Lifestyle, there will be posts that I hope will inspire you to live a more self-sufficient lifestyle. I will also include posts about how to clean up your home from chemicals and how to use natural products for cooking, cleaning, medicinal, and, of course, in the garden.
You might not have the space to become a full on homestead, but there is something you can do with whatever space you have available. Join me and my family on this journey to living a healthy, natural, sustainable life!
